(Track Renovation 4 Community & Kids)

Al OrterOur Mission...
To renovate and upgrade the track located at South Tahoe Middle School creating a modern facility for our kids and the entire South Shore community.

A Piece of Tahoe History...In preparation for the 1968 Summer Olympics, the U.S. Olympic Committee searched for a location for a high altitude track to simulate the conditions our athletes would face in Mexico City. They chose Echo Summit for the Olympic Trials in Track. After the Olympics, the track was donated to the City of South Lake Tahoe and relocated to what is now South Tahoe Middle School.

The Challenge...
Weather and Time Worn TrackAfter more than 30 years, the track has reached the end of its service life. The base is cracked and uneven, the surface worn, torn and slippery, and the field event areas antiquated and worn out. The track was decertified for competitive use by the Empire league several years ago and now the track has been closed for all competitive events.

The Plan...
South Tahoe High School Track Team MembersThe T.R.4.C.K committee has developed a renovation plan for the current site which involves laying back the existing track surface, replacing all damaged base, adding two lanes to make it a full 8 lane track, relaying the existing track along with the extra lanes, pouring a thick cap surface over the entire track and re-striping the surface. Drainage and irrigation problems will also be corrected. Finally, we will add and/or relocate the current bleachers and enclose the entire facility within new fencing.

The Cost...
Hurdlers on the Olympic TrackClearly a community project of this magnitude cannot be accomplished overnight. We have developed a four year timeline for completion. The estimated cost for the project is $560,000. With the current fiscal shortfalls of LTUSD and the City of SLT, to make this dream a reality will require the commitment of many people and many organizations.

Estimated Timeline
2003/04: Make repairs to existing track to allow it to continue to be used. 2003-2006: Fundraising. 2007/08: Track renovation.
